The initial appointment usually includes the assessment of your current problem, establishing therapy goals, and, if time permits, the beginning of developing a treatment plan. This appointment is also for you to get comfortable, to see if the therapist is the right ‘fit’ for you, and to ask questions.
Frequency of Sessions
Typically, clients attend therapy once weekly. However, with specific reference to Transference Focused Psychotherapy for Severe Personality Disorders, mainly with Borderline Personality Disorders, twice weekly is the recommended frequency. Research has shown that the difference between once and twice weekly is far more significant in favor of the latter than it is between two, three, four and five times a week. Of course, simple versus complex, and co-morbid diagnoses, as well as client motivation, readiness, available support system and funding, are all factors to take into consideration. In some cases, depending on the type of therapy being conducted, as few as 5 to 6 sessions can be very helpful with alleviating some concerns and anxiety as an example. With diagnosed psychiatric conditions, use of medications and other psycho-social factors, length of treatment will vary. Sessions are 50 minutes in length, with the beginning and end clearly identified.
Issues of how long treatment is expected to be, how long will various steps take, when should they be taken, as well as how and when will you know that you are moving toward your outcome, are all relevant concerns that will be addressed throughout the length of the treatment.
